Casting Course

Event Start Time 11:00 a.m. Shotgun Start

Arrive 20 minutes prior to assigned start time

Approximate time to complete course is one hour

Conclusion:  3:00p.m.  (estimated)

Practice targets available prior to start

Course: Park area by South Umpqua River at Douglas County Fairgrounds. Just a short saunter and adjacent to the Southern Oregon Fly Tying & Fishing EXPO running concurrently.

Casting Stations, 3 tests per station, 18 total scoring targets for the course

Scoring Number of casts used to hit target. 1,2,3,4 or 5 for anything past 4 attempts. A false cast that touches the ground will be counted as a “cast attempt”.

Each participant will mark their own score card for each station.

Individual scores for each team member at each station will be totaled together for team score for station, and then team score for course.

Lowest Team Score to determine placing 

Casting Stations – three tests at each station

1. Back Cast (delivering cast on backstroke)

2. Curve Casts (around/under structure)

3. Off Shoulder Cast (rod remains over opposite shoulder throughout cast)

4. Off Hand Cast (use of non dominant hand)

5. Seated Cast, (from pontoon)

6. Cross Current, distance/accuracy casts (on river)

Equipment Requirements

9 foot, 4 thru 6 weight—provided by participant

Standard commercial floating fly line—provided by participant

9 foot minimum tapered leader, provided by participant

1 inch egg yarn fly—provided/required by event, no tippet size restrictions

Estimated Time through course for two person team, 1hr (shotgun start)

Integrity Scoring:  team partners required to sign each others score cards verifying both individual and team final score for event.

It is a competition,…lets just remember some things are more important than winning.  If anyone should be able to relate to this it would be fly fishers!  Have fun and give it your all.
